Herman Wedgworth, the first plant pathologist at the Everglades Experiment Station, founds the company with Ruth Wedgworth in 1932, hand mixing fertilizer for the new muck soils; after his death in 1938 Ruth runs and builds the business [WEDGH]. The farm grows winter vegetables before turning to sugarcane in the 1960s, and the family's son George founds the growers cooperative [WEDGF][FPGW].
