The Florida Southern Railway builds through in 1886 on its way to Punta Gorda and the boom incorporates the town in 1887; it remains the county seat through the 1921 division that splits off Charlotte, Glades, Hardee and Highlands counties [WARC][WFSR]. The town hosts the state's oldest rodeo and the Heartland's operating juice plant [DCHS][JAX23].
