The first settlement on the lake's east side, named for the West Palm Beach Canal; the Southern States Land and Timber Company plants sugarcane here from 1917 and by 1922 the community holds 800 of the 900 cane acres in the Glades [WCP][PBCH1]. The USDA sugarcane breeding station of 1920 remains its defining institution [ARSCP].
