John O'Brien of Philadelphia and Alonzo Clewis of Tampa buy the tract in 1920, commission a town plan and build the Moore Haven and Clewiston Railway to reach the Atlantic Coast Line; the city incorporates in 1925 [WCLE]. Sugar builds the town: Southern Sugar's 1929 mill and then U.S. Sugar from 1931 anchor its economy to this day [WCLE][USSH].
