James A. Moore of Seattle establishes and plats the town in 1915 on the lake's southwest shore, opened by the Disston era Caloosahatchee dredging; it incorporates in 1917 and the railroad's Muck Special arrives 13 May 1918 [WMH]. The 1926 hurricane devastates the town and helps drive federal dike building; its cooperative sugar mill runs from 1962 to 1977 [WMH][JMFS].
