Peter Raulerson settles Taylor Creek in 1896 and the Tantie settlement becomes Okeechobee when the Florida East Coast Railway lays out the townsite; the first train arrives 4 January 1915 and the city incorporates on 4 June 1915 [LAM4][WOKE]. The town becomes the county seat in 1917 and the commercial center of the north shore, shipping winter vegetables and lake fish [WOKC][WOKE].
